EMS Transition

As health care providers working in the health care system, it is EMS' responsibility to ensure confidential patient health information is protected.

While the Health Information Act (HIA) has not yet been amended to include ambulance attendants, it is expected to happen in the near future. Until the amendment is made, ambulance attendants are subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA). Alberta Health Services will be applying FOIPPA so that it is consistent with the HIA.

To provide further clarification on the HIA and FOIPPA, two new educational presentations entitledĀ Health Information Act Overview andĀ Disclosure to Law Enforcement have been posted to this website. Please take time to view these presentations and familiarize yourself with what patient information can be shared.
