Alberta School of Radiation Therapy

The Radiation Therapy education program is 28 months long. The program is comprised of a required academic portion of courses delivered in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and clinical experience scheduled at Alberta Health Services – Cancer Care treatment centers that have Radiation Therapy capabilities.

Academic Component

  • Delivered in Edmonton 
  • Courses studied include: Physics, Treatment Planning, Applied Anatomy, Radiation Oncology, Principles and Practical Applications in Radiation Therapy, Radiobiology, Professional Practices and Radiation Safety/Protection, Treatment Planning Applications. 
  • Possibility of co-requisite courses offered through Athabasca University being required.

Clinical Component

  • Delivered in Edmonton at the Cross Cancer Institute and in Calgary at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and possibly in the future the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, Grande Prairie Cancer Centre and the Red Deer Cancer Centre
  • Clinical education site is based on student numbers and site availability 
  • Involves education in scheduled clinical rotations, simulated workshops, labs, oral review and/or test situations, Research Applications, Research Methodology, and patient rounds

The Alberta School of Radiation Therapy education program emphasizes the development of a strong knowledge base, attainment of a diverse spectrum of radiation therapy competencies, confirmation of critical thinking skills and demonstration of an evidence-based reflective practice.

The ASRT may require students to relocate to any of the available clinical sites to gain the required academic/didactic competencies and experience. All costs incurred are the sole responsibility of the student. ASRT requires students to pay for transportation, housing and parking costs during the didactic and clinical components of the program.

Minimum Admission Requirements

Successful completion of 30 credits university or university equivalency and must include:

  • English – 3 credits 
  • Physics – 6 credits 
  • Psychology/Sociology – 6 credits 
  • Anatomy & Physiology – 6 credits 
  • Statistics – 3 credits 
  • Elective – 6 credits

It is recommended that Physics, Anatomy & Physiology and Statistics be obtained within the last 5 years. It is also recommended that Anatomy & Physiology be of a human basis.

  • English language proficiency must be demonstrated.

Student Selection

Students are accepted based on:

  • Academic standing
  • Panel interview
  • Candidate references
  • Candidate career reflection
  • Results of a math and comprehension examination at time of interview
  • Work/volunteer experience in a medical setting 
  • Subject to change without notice.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students are eligible to:

  • Access to the National Certification Examination set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation technologists (CAMRT). See http://www.camrt.ca/ for more details. 
  • Seek licensure by the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists as per provincial requirements. See  http://www.acmdtt.com/ for more details.

Application Deadline

The deadline for completed applications is:

  • January 15 for candidates with out-of-province/country transcripts 
  • May 15 for candidates with in-province transcripts 
  • International transcripts must be submitted through the International Qualification Assessment Service (IQAS)   

The ever changing demands on healthcare providers can result in changes to programming. Interested candidates should contact the Alberta School of Radiation Therapy to verify the accuracy of current information.

As a condition of Alberta Health Services policies and procedures all students must undergo a criminal records check upon acceptance into the educational program. 

Students are required to submit immunization records upon commencement of the program.

Students are required to have valid CPR and basic life support training (level C) prior to starting the education program.
