Dr. Kamalesh Gangopadhyay, Wetaskiwin, Member
Term to March 31, 2013. Dr. Kamalesh Gangopadhyay is a retired obstetrician/gynaecologist who practiced in Wetaskiwin for more than 30 years. He was a pioneer in the use of medical technology in Northern Alberta, becoming the second obstetrician in Northern Alberta to be licensed to do ultrasound in the mid-1980s, and the first physician to conduct laparoscopic surgery at the Wetaskiwin General Hospital.
Dr. Gangopadhyay was awarded a Canadian Medical Association honorary membership, which is given to members who have made outstanding contributions to the field. He is also Member Emeritus of the Alberta Medical Association.
His previous public service includes acting as Co-Chair of the International Committee of the Alberta Community Council on HIV; member of the Board (Treasurer) of the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society; Examiner for the Alberta International Medical Graduate Program; member of the Advisory Board of the Alberta Cervical Cancer Screening Program; and a member of the Reproductive Care Committee.
As a member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Program, he was instrumental in formulating guidelines for breast cancer screening and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention.
He also served as a councillor for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and as a member of the Representative Forum of the Alberta Medical Association.
He was the President of the Alberta Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for two consecutive years, and the Alberta representative on the Human Resources and Economics Committee for the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
