Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities Contracts

Overview

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has legislated responsibility for the planning and delivery of health services in the Province of Alberta. Under this legislation, AHS can either provide services directly or contract with service providers who meet AHS requirements. The agreements listed on this page augment the staff and resources of AHS facilities through:

  • assisting in cost avoidance through the procurement and maintenance of duplicate sets of equipment and facilities
  • reducing the internal workload of AHS facilities by contracting select services to Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities (NHSFs)
  • capitalizing upon the efficiencies of the NHSFs to achieve tangible Net Public Benefit (NPB) such as increased patient access to services, decreasing wait-times, and/or providing an overall cost savings.

The objective of AHS is to ensure that sufficient and appropriate services are provided to improve the health status of the Alberta communities in the province.

  • All services contracted through the agreements presented are currently being provided by accredited NHSF.
  • All clinics must meet standards for accreditation by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
  • Clinics must meet the same standards as hospitals for quality assurance, patient satisfaction, reporting on services provided, reporting of incidents and patient concerns, physician qualifications and compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws. Furthermore, all NHSFs must follow the rules set forth in Alberta’s Health Care Protection Act (HCPA) and HCPA Regulation regarding the sale of enhanced medical goods and services.
