AHS compliant with Alberta’s Tobacco Reduction Act

Alberta Health Services is ensuring patients, visitors and staff have a safe and healthy environment to stay, visit and work in by complying with Alberta’s Tobacco Reduction Act.

The Tobacco Reduction Act, which came into effect on January 1, 2008, prohibits smoking within five metres of a doorway, open window or air intake in a public place or workplace.

AHS Community Peace Officers will be monitoring facilities and approaching anyone not compliant with the Act to inform and educate them about the legislation, and redirect them to an alternative location. Community Peace Officers are empowered by the Government of Alberta to enforce Provincial Statutes related to AHS sites.

Effective January 1, 2011, anyone not in compliance with the Act will be subject to a fine of $287 by an AHS Community Peace Officer.

While in the hospital, patients will be offered a variety of nicotine replacement therapies. Patients should speak to their doctors or nurses for details.  Patients will also be offered follow up and referral to cessation services upon discharge from hospital.

AHS does encourage all Albertans who use tobacco to quit, and those who are thinking about using to never start.

Every year, more than 3000 Albertans die from tobacco-related causes. Sadly, tobacco use is the leading cause of disease, disability and premature death in the province.

But, the harmful effects of smoking do not just impact those who smoke. Second-hand smoke causes serious disease and death in non-smoking adults. Even brief exposure can be dangerous. Enforcement of the Tobacco Reduction Act will have a direct and immediate affect on minimizing the effects of second-hand smoke at AHS facilities.

For help with quitting tobacco use, call the Alberta Health services Smokers Helpline at 1-866-332-2322 or visit their website at www.albertaquits.ca, or speak with you healthcare professional.

Questions, comments or concerns about the legislation, can be directed to AHS Patient Concerns at 1-877-753-2170 (Red Deer & North) or 1-877-957-9771 (South of Red Deer).

Thank you for helping to make Alberta Health Services a tobacco and smoke free environment.
