Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine – Calgary
The clinical arm of the Department of Family Medicine (Calgary) seeks to serve, support and strengthen family physicians and midwives in delivery of care to citizens of Calgary in the following areas:
- Information regarding licensing, opportunities, practice supports and services to family physicians who are considering relocation, are new to Calgary, or who are new to the Department of Family Medicine.
- Appointments (privileges) to the Department of Family Medicine - Alberta Health Services, enabling family physicians to access supports & services available through Alberta Health Services.
- Provision of accredited Continuing Medical Education for members in order to meet their clinical, education and professional development needs.
- Integration of family physician perspectives and input into the development and operations of Alberta Health Services programs.
- Advocacy and innovative initiatives to support and enhance the work lives and practice of members.
Department of Family Medicine, Calgary Zone - Leadership Opportunities:
Deputy Clinical Department Head – Department of Family Medicine
Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone is searching for an outstanding leader with demonstrated skills in administration and experience in comprehensive family medicine. The Deputy Clinical Department Head is a key leadership position in the Department, providing support to the Zone Clinical Department Head to meet the department’s strategic objectives. The Deputy Head will be responsible for leadership in specified areas including work force planning, leadership development and mentorship, quality and safety improvement and a variety of special projects.
The successful candidate will be an experienced Family Physician with an interest in developing his/her leadership skills in a stimulating primary care environment.

Medical Director, Primary Care and Section Chief, Community Primary Care, Department of Family Medicine
Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone is seeking an incumbent to fill this joint position with two roles: Medical Director, Primary Care and Section Chief, Community Primary Care, Department of Family Medicine.
The Medical Director, Primary Care is responsible for providing the medical leadership for the development and operation of primary care in the Calgary Zone. The Chief of the Section of Community Primary Care is responsible for overseeing matters related to the credentialing and privileging of Family Physicians belonging to the Section. This role includes leadership to engage family physicians in the Department of Family Medicine and support them in their care of patients in the community.
The successful candidate will be an experienced Family Physician with demonstrated leadership skills, and possesses strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
This is a 0.4 - 0.6 FTE position. Scope and FTE negotiable depending on candidate’s availability.

Medical Director, Chronic Disease Management, Calgary Zone
Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone is seeking a Medical Director, Chronic Disease Management. The incumbent is responsible for providing the medical leadership for the development and operation chronic disease management in the Calgary Zone. Collaboration with internal Alberta Health Services and programs and external partners is critical to the successful development of chronic disease management.
The successful candidate will hold a physician clinical appointment with Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone and possess demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to effectively develop and lead teams.
This is a 0.2 - 0.4 FTE position. Scope and FTE negotiable depending on candidate’s availability.

Outstanding Family Physician Award 2012 – Call for Nominations
The Department of Family Medicine – Calgary is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the Outstanding Family Physician Award for 2012. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 16th.
All nominations will be reviewed by a committee of Alberta Health Services staff and physicians and the Outstanding Family Physician will be announced in April 2012.
