Violence Prevention

While injuries as a result of intentional violence peak during adolescence and young adulthood they are still a primary cause of injury for adults, especially for men. Domestic violence is a major health issue, as well as a social issue, but in this case the majority of victims are female.

Abusive behaviour can take many forms including:

  • sexual abuse
  • abandonment
  • neglect Abusive behaviours are those in which one person is trying to have power or control of another person.

Smart risk strategies for dealing with domestic violence/abuse include:

Look First

  • Know the signs.

Get Trained

  • Know the options that are available to support someone.

Seek Help

  • If you are being abused contact someone who can help.
  • If you think someone you know is being abused, ask directly about whether abuse is occurring. In a private place, when you are alone with the person, ask clear and direct questions about violence and abuse. The abused often blame themselves, or do not report the abuse for fear of embarrassment or being sent to an institution.
  • Support the person in getting help.
