Applications for General AHS & NADC Joint Bursary Partnership Program Closed

The deadline to submit your application for the 2011/12 general AHS & NADC Joint Bursary Partnership Program has passed. Once the selection decisions have been made, all applicants will be notified by email.


Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) are proud to offer this unique bursary opportunity. This bursary partnership program will match between $1,000 and $3,000 per student – to a total of $6,000 per year.

Administration of Awards

Application Process

  • Completely fill in the application form (see ‘Important Links’ on the right side of this page).
  • Attach a current resume.
  • Attach a personal application letter (to convey your motivation to work/study in your chosen health care field and describe your interest in this bursary program).
  • Send the entire package as one scanned document to Professional Development Special Funding at educationfunding@albertahealthservices.ca  
  • Be prepared to provide proof of your First Nation, Métis, or Inuit heritage at the time of acceptance of the award. A copy of a status card will be required.

Application Timeline

Applications will be accepted from Monday, December 5, 2011, to Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Selection Criteria

NADC’s Requirements

  • Students must be a resident of Alberta for one year.
  • Students must be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program designated by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.
  • Students must not be in default of a provincial loan.
  • Students must be at arm's length from the sponsor (not related and selected by impartial means).
  • Students must have reasonably good prospects for employment in northern Alberta upon graduation.
  • Students cannot receive both the NADC bursary and the partnerships bursary during the same school year.
  • Students can receive more than one partnership bursary; however, the total matching funds from NADC cannot exceed $3,000 in the same academic year.

AHS’s Requirements (in addition to the NADC requirements)

  • Students must be of First Nation, Métis, or Inuit heritage, and able to provide proof of status upon acceptance of the award. A copy of a status card will be required.
  • Students must be willing and able to sign a Return of Service agreement to work at an AHS facility in NADC's geographic area.
  • Students must be enrolled in a health care related program at an accredited post secondary institution.
  • Other criteria as identified by AHS (such as positions and locations deemed to be under pressure).

Important: Recipients of this bursary are obligated to obtain a position within AHS that meets the terms of the Return of Service agreement.

Neither AHS nor NADC are required to find or hold a position on behalf of bursary recipients. Receipt of this award is not an offer of employment.

Selection Process

  • All applications will be reviewed by an AHS selection committee.
  • Applications are rated on a standard scale to ensure fair and impartial review
  • Selection criteria include (but are not limited to):
  • An applicant’s heritage
  • An applicant’s potential to fit the needs of the organization as identified by AHS (i.e.: positions, locations and/or fields of study deemed to be under pressure)
  • Quality of resume
  • Quality of responses to “Student Remarks” and their compatibility with AHS goals and values
  • Other criteria deemed appropriate in accordance with the Terms of Reference and the needs of AHS.

Return of Service Agreement

Successful applicants will receive two Return of Service agreements, one for Alberta Health Services and one for NADC. Each agreement will require one month of Return of Service for each $500 of total bursary support (i.e, if your total bursary amount is $3,000, the return service agreements would total six months served consecutively).

Recipients who do not meet the Return of Service agreement will be required to repay the bursary.

Notifying Applicants

All candidates (successful or not) will be notified via email of the status of their applications. If successful, recipients will receive further instructions.

Please note: the timeline for notifying all applicants of their status depends on volume of applications received.

Award Recipient Recognition

While each application is treated in a confidential manner, successful applicants agree to have their names shared within AHS. In addition, the successful applicants agree that their names may be posted in documents or on websites that are open to the public.
