New Child Car Seat Regulations
January 6, 2012
What’s New?
On January 01, 2012, new Transport Canada regulations for child safety seats came into affect, in Canada. The regulations apply to manufacturers of new car seats, intended for sale in Canada.
What’s Different?
As of January 01, 2012:
- All rear-facing car seats sold in Canada will be manufactured to support an infant weighing up to (at least) 10kg, or 22lbs
- All forward-facing car seats sold in Canada will be manufactured to support a child weighing up to a maximum of 30kg, or 65lbs
What does this mean to me?
Parents DO NOT need to replace their child’s current car seat, so long as the current car seat is in good condition and is not expired.
Parents DO need to:
- Ensure that their child’s current car seat is appropriate for their child’s height and weight
- Check the expiry date sticker on their child’s current car seat, and ensure car seat is not expired
- Take the Yes Test to ensure current car seat is correctly installed in the vehicle
