A form of H1N1 virus has been contributing factor in several deaths in Alberta. It is important to remember that every year, 4,000 Canadians die from the flu. Many of these people have underlying health problems that make them more at risk of serious consequences when they get the flu. Situations like this are common and expected. Information is being gathered about who is at increased risk. At this point, PHAC has not provided this information beyond the advice regarding pregnant women.
It is expected that those who are at higher risk for influenza-related complications are also higher risk for severe H1N1 disease.
