Make a great first impression
Your resume and cover letter is how you introduce yourself to a potential employer. You want to make a great first impression and get an interview. The governments of Alberta and Canada offer useful tools to help make your cover letter and resume stand out.
Resources to help you create a winning resume and cover letter
Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) - Government of Alberta
ALIS offers you a straightforward overview of what you should include in an effective resume and cover letter. You can also take advantage of their Career Information Hotline as well as a free resume review service. Would a sample cover letter help? You'll find that here too.
Job Bank - Service Canada
At the government of Canada's Job Bank, you can take advantage of an easy-to-use Resume Builder. Create your resume one step at a time by entering your information into the appropriate boxes. The Resume Builder does the formatting for you. Need help? At each step, you can find suggestions on the kind of information you should include.
Improve your interviews
Doing well in interviews is a skill you can develop. A little research and practice can make the difference between so-so interviews and great ones. And it never hurts to learn techniques to calm those nervous feelings we all get! ALIS has some great tips to help you prepare for and succeed in an interview.
Don’t give up
If you aren’t chosen - don’t give up! Sometimes our internal candidates are successful on new career opportunities which mean external candidates need to apply on more than one or two competitions before they are short listed. AHS has hired employees who applied many times before starting a career with us. Keep trying!
