Patient Food Services
When a diet is prescribed by a physician or dietitian, it’s the responsibility of Patient Food Services to ensure that the food served agrees with this order. Patient Food Services staff deliver more than 30,000 patient meals each and every day.
It is essential that both patients and residents are happy with these meals. Food is necessary to keep them healthy and to help them to heal. To make meals that are both tasty and nutritious, there is a specialized team to plan and continually improve menus. The team includes dietitians, food service leaders and qualified cooks.
Meal timing varies by site. However, generally, there are three meals. As well, there are beverages and snack items for patients and residents in the nourishment centres. Guest meals for those wanting to eat with their loved one may be available at a nominal fee; it is important to ask in advance.
In smaller centres in Alberta, the Patient Food Services staff also run the cafeteria. Here, the customers are staff and visitors.
