Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps people achieve an independent, productive and satisfying lifestyle. Occupational therapists help people do important everyday activities. Occupational therapists see people where they are—in the hospital, their homes, or the workplace.

For example:

If a stroke results in weakness on one side of a person’s body, an occupational therapist (OT) may provide a wheelchair so the person can get around independently in the hospital while recovering. The OT may also help regain hand function for daily tasks such as brushing one’s teeth and writing.
Before a hip replacement, an occupational therapist may come to the person’s home and provide education about managing after surgery and help set up the home for a safe recuperation.
If a head injury causes a memory problem, an occupational therapist (OT) may help the person with strategies to remember important daily tasks and get to appointments on time. The OT may also provide activities to restore memory.

Who can benefit from Occupational Therapy?

Health conditions and injury can impact our skills for the job of living, and occupational therapy can enable people to do those activities. Essentially, anyone who has difficulty with a desired activity can benefit from occupational therapy.
