Home Hemodialysis - Southern Alberta Renal Program (SARP)
Home Hemodialysis is done by the patient in the home and offers more freedom, better health and an increased sense of well-being. Patients receive six weeks training at either the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre in Calgary, Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, or Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, and return home to perform their own dialysis.
Most types of Home Hemodialysis are gentler and more like the natural action of a health kidney. Extra fluid and toxins are removed more slowly and more completely over a longer period of time. It offers more dialysis than can be offered in a hospital setting. Many different dialysis schedules are available to suit your lifestyle. The most common and most healthy dialysis schedule is six to eight hours, six nights per week. Patients may choose nocturnal (at night while they sleep) or daily hemodialysis.
Who can benefit from Home Hemodialysis: anyone who can do home hemodialysis can benefit from it. Patients who want treatment that is more like a healthy kidney; patients who want more freedom in their schedule; patients who don't want to commute to their dialysis treatments; patients who want to continue working; and patients who simply want more involvement in their care.
