Immunization - Infant and Preschool Services

Immunizing your child is the best way to protect them against vaccine preventable diseases that may have serious complications. It is recommended that infant immunization start at 2 months of age to offer protection against these diseases. Vaccines are effective and safe, much safer than the diseases they prevent. They are constantly monitored and tested in Canada and around the world before they are approved for use. Severe reactions from vaccines are extremely rare; most side effects are minor if they occur at all. Following immunization your child may have a low grade fever, sleep more than usual, be cranky or fussy or have tenderness and redness where the vaccine was given. These expected reactions usually last for a couple of days at the most following immunization.  If you have any questions regarding immunization your public health nurse is an excellent resource and can help answer your questions.

Immunization is provided free of charge at your local Community/Public Health Centre. Remember it is never too late to protect your child against vaccine preventable diseases.

The routine immunization program for infants and preschool children provides primary immunization against the following vaccine preventable diseases: Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, and Haemophilus Influenza type B,

  • Meningococcal
  • Pneumococcal
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella
  • Influenza (given annually to all children)

Other vaccines may be recommended or necessary for children based on risk factors or an underlying medical condition.  Your public health nurse will discuss this with you as the child’s parent/legal guardian or answer any questions you may have.
