Environmental Public Health Program

Environmental Public Health supports safe and healthy environments where people live, work, and play. Public health inspectors focus on the prevention of disease and injury, protection against health threats and hazards, and promotion of health and well-being.

Services we offer:

  • regulating public places like restaurants, daycares, swimming pools, work camps, long-term care facilities and nursing homes, playgrounds, special events, and esthetic services (e.g., tattoo studios, manicures, pedicures, facials, hair styling).
  • inspecting rental housing and accommodations to ensure they meet minimum health standards.
  • inspecting tobacco and vaping retailers.
  • investigating illnesses and disease outbreaks.
  • education on topics including food safety, pool operation and child care health and safety.
  • public health information and consultation to businesses and the public.
  • providing water quality sampling supplies and consultation for public and private drinking water systems, public swimming pools, and beaches.
  • plan reviews, grant approvals, and issues permits and licenses for new businesses and special events that fall under Alberta's Public Health Act.
  • reviews and makes recommendations to approving authorities regarding proposed land use developments (e.g., intensive livestock operations, industrial plants, or developments on contaminated sites).
