What to Expect

Colonoscopy Appointment Information

  • The colonoscopy appointment usually takes between 1.5 to three hours. The test itself takes 20-30 minutes.
  • If a large polyp is found during your colonoscopy, it may not be removed during this procedure. These polyps can be difficult to remove, require additional procedure time and equipment. Another physician with additional experience in the removal of these polyps may be required. A repeat colonoscopy will most likely be booked 2-6 months following your initial colonoscopy.

There is strong medical evidence to show that colon cancer screening can reduce colon cancer deaths. Only about 20% of Albertans age 50 to 75 are presently being screened for colon cancer.

Everyone is at risk of colon cancer. It does not discriminate, and even the healthiest person can develop the disease. Age, diet, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of getting colon cancer. The good news it is preventable, if early pre-cancerous symptoms are found and treated.
