AHS warns about caller advising breast self-exam 

EDMONTON/NORTH – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is warning women in the Edmonton area and northern Alberta to be aware of misleading telephone calls regarding breast cancer screening results.

AHS has received reports eight women in the Edmonton, Barrhead and Athabasca areas have received a phone call from a man claiming to be from a medical imaging facility. The caller relays breast screening exam followup information and advises an immediate breast self-exam must be conducted while on the phone.

Although AHS representatives may call to discuss a mammography appointment, they will never ask a patient to conduct a breast self-exam over the phone.

If you receive a phone call from anyone requesting you complete a breast self-exam while on the phone, please hang up, note the time and any other call details, and immediately contact local police on their non-emergency line.

If you are uncomfortable with calling police directly or are uncertain whether the call is legitimate, you can call AHS’ Screening Program Client Support Line at 1-866-727-3926.

AHS has informed law enforcement and encourages anyone who has experienced this issue to please work with their local police or RCMP.
