BARRHEAD – Local residents have increased access to primary care with the arrival of a new family physician now practising in the community.

Dr. Kevin Visser is a family medicine physician working out of the Barrhead Healthcare Centre and the Barrhead Medical Clinic.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Dr. Visser back home to Barrhead,” says Dr. Firdaus Mydeen, Associate Zone Medical Director for Alberta Health Services (AHS). “He is a great addition to our local care team. His skill and expertise will help increase access to healthcare for residents and help support our local medical team.”

Originally from Neerlandia, a hamlet within the County of Barrhead No. 11., Dr. Visser received medical training in the Caribbean, the U.K., and the U.S. He completed his medical residency in Omaha and Kearney, in Nebraska.

Dr. Visser returned to Barrhead last month.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Visser says he has an interest in sports, nutrition, and gardening. He and his wife are currently doing home renovations, and they also enjoy travelling, spending time outdoors and visiting with friends and family.

AHS continues to recruit for family physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
