Calgary Breast Health Program

Alternate names: (Previous names: Breast Health Clinic, Regional Breast Health Program)

This Program is committed to ensuring that timely, integrated, and coordinated breast health services are readily accessible. Individuals seen in private surgeon offices can now access all services. Services provided may include:

  • Breast Health Clinic
    The Calgary Breast Health Program is for women and men (at any age) to improve breast health. The Breast Health Clinic is the cornerstone of the Calgary Breast Health Program and works closely with diagnostic imaging, pathology, oncology and psychosocial support services to assess, diagnose and treat breast health issues including breast cancer. The program partners closely with specialists from cancer centres,  University of Calgary and other community agencies to provide excellence in breast health care.The Breast Health Clinic has a surgical procedure room in which minor breast surgery (for example, biopsies) can be preformed. More extensive breast surgery is done in one of the Calgary Health Zone acute care sites Patients who are newly diagnosed are given support and information to prepare for breast surgery. Patients are followed postoperatively by Surgeon and Nurse Navigator.
  • High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic 
    The High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic is for women or men, who are at higher risk for developing breast cancer. Referrals to this clinic would include those who have had radiation to the chest area, a history of precancerous conditions or a confirmed genetic mutation (e.g., BRCA 1, BRCA 2)
  • Nurse  Navigation
    Provided to women and men who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The service provides education, information on breast cancer resources and support.
  • Education
    Breast health nurses provide education and support to individual clients following a positive breast cancer diagnosis. Written materials on breast health or breast cancer can be accessed from the clinic or nurse navigators. In addition, a variety of classes are available on topics from health promotion and prevention to the art of breast cancer survivorship. Access to the Women's Health Resources Library provides a wealth of information and is located next to the Breast Health Clinic in the Women's Health Centre.
  • Referral
    Depending on individual needs, referrals can be coordinated to other specialists (Geneticist; Plastic Surgeon; Medical Oncologist or Radiation Oncologist; Dietitian; Psychosocial counsellor) or community resources.

Physician referral required. Referrals can be faxed.

The program participates in Central Access and Triage.
