What's New
A phased sequential opening of additional programs and services will follow over the next year and a half. Other planned opening dates include:
- Cardiac and Internal Medicine: Fall 2012
- Emergency Department: Winter 2012/2013
- Operating Rooms: Early 2013
- Fully Operational: Late 2013
As with most projects of this size and complexity, the dates will be adjusted if necessary in order to ensure our first priority - the safety of staff and patients.
The phasing in of clinical services is standard methodology when opening large health care facility. It allows for the timely coordination of hiring, commissioning, training and development of the equipment, systems and teams that will be providing patient care.
The South Health Campus
When it opens this summer, Calgary’s new South Health Campus will be a different kind of health facility.
The campus will connect hospital care with community services, promote health as much as treat illness and help teach health care professionals innovative ways to care for patients.
There will be a lot of learning at the state-of-the-art facility - that’s why it’s called the South Health Campus.
The South Health Campus will include a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, with a focus on wellness services and facilities. These wellness services will make illness prevention, management and community health education an important focus of the campus.
By late 2013, the South Health Campus is expected to have about 2,400 full-time staff positions and 180 physicians supporting 310 beds and bed equivalents, 11 operating rooms, 200,000 outpatient visits a year, 2,500 births and 40,000 visits to the emergency department.
Quick Facts
- The South Health Campus is on 44 acres at Deerfoot Trail and 196 Ave. SE in Calgary.
- The Alberta government has committed $1.31 billion toward the project.
The campus – which is roughly the same size as Calgary’s Chinook Centre Mall – will serve Calgary and surrounding rural areas as well as see patients from all over Southern Alberta who will be referred to South Health Campus for additional or specialized care.
