The Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS) opened in 2006. Uniquely situated in the lower level of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, ABACUS is a molecules-to-populations translational research facility. Heart patients taking part in studies and clinical trials will advance medical understanding of cardiovascular disease, while benefiting from state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and breakthrough therapies. ABACUS will also track the progress of heart and stroke patients and evaluate treatments and strategies, all within the safe and leading edge clinical care environment of the Heart Institute.
The Cardiovascular Research Centre (CVRC) is a newly developed research infrastructure where new therapeutic strategies can be developed to improve cardiac surgery outcomes. The CVRC contains a Therapeutics Facility for clinical research and a Cardiac Analysis Facility for biomedical research. It will be within the Heart Institute and the new Health Research Innovation Facility at the University of Alberta.
