Practice summer safety during the Calgary Stampede

July 5, 2018

CALGARY – Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with Alberta Health Services reminds residents and visitors to protect themselves and their families from the potential hazards of sun exposure during the 10 days of the Calgary Stampede.

In addition to the risk of sunburn, rising temperatures also increase the risk of heat-related illness, including heat exhaustion and sunstroke. While children, the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly susceptible to a heat-related emergency and dehydration, it’s important all Stampede-goers follow these simple precautions:

  • Wear waterproof sunscreen of 30 SPF, or greater, apply 20 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If possible, wear long pants and
  • long-sleeved shirts that cover skin.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages. Proper hydration begins the night before.
  • Prepare a backpack with sunscreen, bottled water, an extra pair of shoes and healthy snacks, such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Pay attention to your body and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion and sunstroke; be vigilant and watch for symptoms in yourself and others.

If you feel dizzy, nauseous and/or faint, you may be experiencing a heat-related emergency. Drink plenty of water and move into shade. Symptoms of sunstroke include high body temperature, lack of sweat, disorientation, fainting and unconsciousness. Move people with sunstroke to shade, remove their outer clothing and shoes, wrap them in a wet towel and get medical attention promptly.

“Precautions can and should be taken to stay healthy and safe,” says Adam Loria, Public Education Officer, Calgary Zone EMS. “Whether taking in the parade, hanging out at Stampede Park, or simply being outside enjoying the weather, adhering to a few safety suggestions can go a long way for your health and well-being.”

During tomorrow’s Stampede Parade, EMS paramedic practitioners and staff will be available throughout the parade route, providing medical care to spectators and participants who require it. EMS will also establish a well-ventilated, mobile medical clinic and rehabilitation area, with treatment beds staffed by paramedics and a physician. EMS’ Rapid Access Paramedic mountain bike teams and various other EMS resources will ensure prompt medical attention is available to parade spectators and participants.
