AHS notifying individuals of potential tuberculosis exposure

May 22, 2019

CALGARY - Alberta Health Services (AHS) is notifying 200 individuals that they may have been exposed to two cases of tuberculosis (TB) at a high school in north Calgary. These cases do not present a risk to public nor an ongoing risk at any school. Notification is occurring by mailed letter. Only those who receive direct notification from AHS are considered possibly exposed. Notification includes information on arrangements for standard TB assessment, screening and treatment, if required.

Risk of transmission from these cases is considered low, and again, public can be assured that the cases do not present an ongoing risk at any school nor to the general public. We are simply informing the public as a matter of transparency.

Our TB Services and Calgary Zone Medical Officer of Health are managing the follow-up screening that is routine in response to any exposure to active cases of infectious TB. These efforts are in keeping with our commitment to high quality care and our values of excellence and safety.

To protect patient confidentiality, no further case-specific details will be released by AHS, including the name of the location at which the exposures took place.

For general information on TB, see TB FAQ. Anyone with questions can call Health Link 24/7 at 811.
