Media Statement: Carewest Sarcee bed changes

December 15, 2019

CALGARY - AHS, in partnership with Carewest, is making changes to care spaces at Carewest Sarcee to better meet the need for specialized continuing care services in the Calgary Zone.

The change will help ensure people with health issues get the help, support and treatment they need.

The converted spaces will provide short-stay restorative care and support individuals assessed as not requiring the services of an acute care hospital while awaiting transfer to a different level of care in the community.

They are expected to begin opening in April, 2020.

This initiative involves converting 15 hospice beds and 45 existing long term care spaces at Carewest Sarcee into these specialized care spaces.

Calgary will not lose any hospice spaces. Fifteen hospice beds will open at another site this spring. No current Sarcee hospice residents will be required to move as a result of these changes and there will be no gap in availability of hospice beds.

We have been working closely with residents and families who may be affected and have spoken to each of them about this change.

Carewest continues to work with staff and union partners to ensure there is no involuntary loss of employment as a result of this important initiative. As well, they are engaging with Sarcee hospice volunteers and donors on alternate opportunities to volunteer and provide support within Carewest.
