50 new continuing care spaces open in Drayton Valley

DRAYTON VALLEY — Seniors and local residents who require additional supports with daily living now have more options for continuing care in their community with the opening of Points West Living (PWL) Drayton Valley. Residents begin moving in over the weekend.

Located in the town’s northwest, the former hotel now provides a range of community-based services under one roof. This includes 50 new designated supportive living spaces, 18 of which are specially designed for supporting individuals with dementia. There are also six independent living spaces at the facility, providing options for residents to age in place and receive more care as they need it.

“The opening of these additional supportive living spaces is welcome news,” says Mark Smith, MLA for Drayton Valley – Devon. “These new continuing care spaces in our community means more seniors in the Drayton Valley area can receive the care they need right here in the community as they age, close to family and friends.”

Supportive living promotes independence and aging in place through services such as 24-hour monitoring and emergency response from care staff, security, meals, housekeeping and social-enrichment activities.

On-site licensed practical nurses and healthcare aides support residents who require assistance with daily living, including personal care, and recreational programs.

PWL Drayton Valley offers many features, including a courtyard with a walking path, a gazebo, and an open space for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“These new supportive living spaces provide a range of care levels for adults and seniors in a home-like setting,” says Lori Sparrow, Senior Operating Officer for Community and Seniors Health in the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS). “The mix of living options, including dementia care, helps meet the health and personal needs of residents in a safe and secure environment, while incorporating and acknowledging the unique needs of each individual.”

This is the latest partnership between AHS and contracted provider PWL, which also operates seniors communities in Wainwright, Red Deer, Stettler, Peace River, Lloydminster, Cold Lake and Vegreville.

“Our care and service team is excited to begin providing quality service to individuals in the Drayton Valley area and we are grateful for our great partnership with AHS, sharing our commitment to building resident-centered communities,” says Linda Revell, President & CEO, PWL and Connecting Care. “We are pleased to participate in this unique project that gives a former hotel a new life as a seniors community. We look forward to inviting residents to the newest community of Points West Living.”
