Alberta Works
Aims to help unemployed people find and keep jobs, help employers meet their need for skilled workers, and help Albertans with low incomes cover their basic costs of living.

Assured Income for Severely Handicapped (AISH)
Provides financial and health-related assistance to eligible adults with a disability. AISH clients may also be eligible to receive supplemental assistance (a child benefit and personal benefits). AISH health benefits and supplemental assistance may also assist a client’s cohabiting partner and dependent children.

Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D) Benefits
Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Disability Benefits provide a monthly taxable benefit to contributors who are disabled and to their dependent children.

Employment Insurance (EI)
Provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed Canadians who have lost their job through no fault of their own, while they look for work or upgrade their skills.

  • Compassionate Care Benefits - for persons who have to be away from work temporarily to provide care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with a significant risk of death.
  • Online Application - ask your healthcare provider for assistance or you can apply online
  • Sickness Benefits - for individuals who are unable to work because of sickness, injury, or quarantine.

Workers Compensation Board - Alberta
Not-for-profit organization that helps injured workers return to work as quickly and as safely as possible, while providing financial compensation for wage loss due to their workplace injury.

Most employers and workers are covered by WCB-Alberta; however some industries are not required to have this coverage.

Personal Directives, Guardianship and Trusteeship

Adult Guardianship and Trustee Act
AGTA is for adults unable to make personal or financial decisions for themselves. This legislation help protect vulnerable adults, including a range of decision-making options. (AHS - Quick Facts)

Office of Public Guardian (OPG)
OPG provides decision-making mechanisms for individuals who are unable to make personal, non-financial decisions for themselves. The OPG also administers the Personal Directives Registry and the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Registry.

Legal documents that you can write in case something happens and you cannot make your own personal decisions in the future.
