Order sets group several orders together to make order entry convenient and efficient. They can be as small as two orders together such as a test and the test prep. At the other end of the spectrum, they can offer a comprehensive plan of care focused on a patient’s health issues.

Order sets can be convenience-based, departmental-based,

or pan-departmental-based.

There are three types of order sets: standard, multi-order, and referenced order sets. You’ll learn more about these soon.

Some of the features of order sets include:

Order Timing

The order’s priority appears on the right side of the window.

T indicates these orders are for today. Orders for tomorrow would read T+1.

Some orders may be pre-selected. You can modify the order and select as many or as few items as you need.

convenience-based: commonly ordered items are presented (e.g. common labs)

departmental-based: consultation within a department has determined the necessary orders (e.g. chest pain)

pan-departmental-based: a protocol or plan of care is utilized broadly by multiple departments (e.g. heparin infusion)
