Additional Test Information: | 1. Patient must be fasting at least 8 hours. Water is allowed at any time. 2. Draw a fasting glucose sample and deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Indicate "fasting" on the label. 3. Analyze the fasting glucose level of the patient using a glucose meter. EDTA preferred sample for glucometer testing only. If the result is >7.8 mmol/L, order a fasting glucose and do not proceed with tolerance test. If the result is <5.2 mmol/L, proceed with the glucose tolerance test. 4. Administer the drink: GTTPR: Adult (pregnant) - 75 g glucose NOTE: It is important to check that the full GTTPR is required and not the GDS. Patient should ingest the entire drink as quickly as possible but within 5 minutes and remain at rest for the duration of the test and neither eat nor smoke. Water intake is allowed. If a patient vomits within 30 minutes of taking the drink, discontinue the test. 5. Draw a 1 and 2 hour sample and deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Indicate "1 hour" and "2 hour" on the label. Timing should start from the start of ingestion of the drink. Write the appropriate collection times on each label as you collect them (1 h and 2 h time). The presence of hypoglycemia should be confirmed by having the patient enrolled in a home glucose monitoring program. Also see Glucose, GDS (GDS). | ||
