Test Name/Synonym: | CULTURE, Aspirate/Fluid - Central Zone
Test Code: | CUBF - AEROBIC CUANF - ANAEROBIC
Minimum Collection Volume: | Fine needle aspirate fluid, Bile Fluid Fluid - Pericardial, Peritoneal, Pleural or Synovial
Specimen Collection Requirements: | Requisition to Use: Central Zone Laboratory Requisition - Sample in tubes containing anticoagulant will not be processed.
Processing: | MATERIALS: - Materials required for collection of aspirate. - Sterile red top vacutainer tube. - Anaerobe transport container if anaerobic culture requested. - 70% alcohol. PROCEDURE: 1. Collect sample. - Expel all air from syringe prior to collecting sample. - Cleanse the intact skin/mucosa with surgical soap and 70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. - Clean the centre of the transport tube/container with 70% alcohol prior to sampling. - If possible, allow the vacutainer to draw the sample to avoid introducing air. 2. If the volume is > 5 drops. - For aerobic culture submit whole sample in a sterile red top vacutainer tube. - For anaerobic culture submit whole sample in an anaerobic transport container. 3. If the volume is < 5 drops. - Rinse the syringe with 4 to 5 drops of sterile saline and submit whole amount in a sterile red top vacutainer tube. - Indicate "saline added" on order or sample container. 4. Label all sample containers. 5. Refrigerate tube/sterile container of fluids if sample cannot be transported to lab within 24h. - Store anaerobic container and fine needle aspirates at room temperature. Do not refrigerate. - Transport to the Lab immediately. 6. If multiple tests are requested, prioritize the requests.
