Processing: | MATERIALS: - Sterile clean catch container or bedpan. - Skin cleanser. - Vacutainer urine tube with preservative - Transfer straw kit - Orange top sterile container for small volume (<5 mL) For catheter: - 21 gauge needle and syringe or Luer-LokTM Access Device PROCEDURE: 1. Collect urine. MIDSTREAM URINE: - Male - cleanse the glans penis with soap and water or towelette provided with container. - Female - cleanse the vulva with soap and water or towelette provided with container. Hold the labia apart during collection. - Instruct the patient to pass some urine which is discarded. - Pass a further quantity of urine into a sterile container but cease collecting before micturition is completed. CATHETER URINE: - Disinfect catheter wall at its junction with the drainage tube. - Use a 21 gauge needle and syringe to puncture the tube at the cleansed site and aspirate urine into the syringe or use Luer-LokTM Access Device to obtain urine. DO NOT: a) Break connection between catheter and drainage tube. b) Collect urine from drainage bag. 2. Follow the BD package instructions: - Transfer sample from sterile container to grey top vacutainer tube as soon as possible after sample collection. - Place sterile container with urine on a clean, flat surface. - Without touching tip of straw, insert the transfer straw into the urine collection container. The container may be tipped at an angle if urine volume is limited. - Press the grey top vacutainer tube onto the transfer straw and allow tube to fill to minimum fill line. The urine level must meet the minimum fill line of 4mL to be valid. DO NOT fill tubes by pouring urine, or injecting urine, into the tube. Overfilled and underfilled tubes will not be processed. - Remove the tube from the holder. - Discard the transfer straw into sharps container. - Label the sample. - Mix vacutainer 8-10 times by inversion. - Discard remaining urine if not required for other laboratory tests. - Store tubes at room temperature. Transport to lab within 48 hours. - Note: small volume collections (<5mL) should be submitted in a sterile orange top container. DO NOT transfer urine into vacutainer tube. Refrigerate during storage and transport with ice packs within 24h of collection. Whole urine samples >24h old will not be processed. - Use universal precautions and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). - Clearly indicate definitive source of urine (collection method) on requisition. | ||
