Additional Test Information: | If patient is a child (<= 12 yr) supply height and weight. TEST NOT CONTINUED WHEN: a) Fasting glucose is > 7.8 mmol/L PATIENT PREPARATION: - Fast for a minimum of 8 hours. - Fasting is defined as nothing to eat, chew or drink other than small amounts of water. TEST PROCEDURE: - Remind patient they will remain fasting during the test i.e. nothing to eat, chew or drink other than small amounts of water. Smoking is NOT permitted during test. - Collect fasting blood specimen and analyze. - If fasting glucose is > 7.8 mmol/L the tolerance test will be cancelled. - Administer glucose load: - Non-pregnant adults: 75 g glucose load - Children <= 12 years: 1.75 g/kg of IBW (ideal body weight) glucose load. - To determine the glucose load for children <= 12 years of age, refer to the DTHR Guide to Lab Services; Information; Specimen Collection; Glucose Load for Children <= 12 years. - Note the time the drink was started. - Encourage patient to finish drink within 5 min. - Patient may resume normal diet and activities at conclusion of test. | ||
