Specimen Collection Requirements:

Medicine Hat and Area:

Fill evacuated tubes completely.
Microtainer tubes are not acceptable.
SST specimen stable uncentrifuged for 1 hour only, therefore it must be centrifuged within 1 hour post collection.
DO NOT OPEN TUBE. Must be delivered to the lab ASAP.

Medicine Hat and Area Rural:

For transportation of samples, ship on a cold pack. Do not use dry ice.

MHRH Capillary Samples:

Arterialize the capillary bed by warming the area to 42°C before puncturing the skin.
Use “calcium-titrated” heparin capillary tubes (these are the safe CLINITUBES).
Mix the blood and heparin well but not excessively.
Deliver to lab immediately for testing

Lethbridge:

Fill evacuated tubes completely.
Microtainer tubes are not acceptable.
SST specimen stable uncentrifuged for 1 hour only, therefore it must be centrifuged within 1 hour post collection.
DO NOT OPEN TUBE. Must be delivered to the lab ASAP
Do NOT collect on ice.
Lethbridge Outpatient Lab: Send UNSPUN tube to Main Lab immediately

Processing:

Transport to lab immediately according to performing site specific Stat process.

SST specimens are stable once centrifuged for 3 hours at 25°C and 6 hours at 4°C provided the tubes remain unopened.
Lithium Heparin specimens- keep at room temperature and test within one hour of collection.
