Additional Test Information: | 1. Patient must be fasting at least 8 hours. Water is allowed at any time. 2. Draw a fasting glucose sample and deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Indicate "fasting" on the label. 3. Analyse the fasting glucose level of the patient using a glucose meter. EDTA preferred sample for glucometer testing only. If the result is > 7.8 mmol/L, order a fasting glucose and do not proceed with tolerance test. If the result is < 7.8 mmol/L, proceed with the glucose tolerance test. 4. Administer the drink: GTT2:Adult (non-pregnant) – 75 g glucose Child – up to 75 g (1.75 g/kg up to 75 g) Patient should ingest the entire drink as quickly as possible but within 5 minutes and remain at rest for the duration of the test and neither eat nor smoke. Water intake is allowed. If a patient vomits within 30 minutes of taking the drink, discontinue the test. 5. Draw a 2 hour sample and deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Indicate "2 hour" on the label. Timing should start from the start of ingestion of the drink. NOTE: If patient is pregnant, order GTTPR NOT GTT2 or GTT3. The presence of hypoglycemia should be confirmed by having the patient enrolled in a home glucose monitoring program. Also see Glucose, GDS (GDS). GTTPR. | ||
