Specimen Collection Requirements:	For those sites that refer to DynaLIFE Medical Labs, see Body Fluid in the DynaLIFE Medical Labs Test Directory or contact DynaLIFE Specimen Control at 1-800-661-9876. For those site referring to QEII: Clean the needle puncture site with alcohol and disinfect it with a 10% solution of povidone-iodine. Iodine should remain on the skin for at least 60 seconds prior to aspiration. The physician will aseptically perform percutaneous aspiration to obtain pleural, pericardial, peritoneal, or synovial fluids. Expel any air bubbles from the syringe. Inject fluid into a sterile container, or a BACTEC blood culture vial (one pediatric vial only if <3 ml, or one anaerobic plus one pediatric vial if there is a large enough sample). Prior to inoculation of the vials, the center tabs from the vial caps must be removed and the septum swabbed with 70% isopropyl alcohol (iodine i.e. Betadine or acetone compounds must not be used because of damage caused to the septum). Do not overfill the containers, as this may lead to greater chances of specimen leakage. If fluid is of very small quantity and only routine C&S is required, a sterile swab may be used to collect specimen. Place inoculated swab into anaerobic transport media (i.e. Port-A-Cult or other anaerobic specimen collector). For those sites referring to Bonnyville: Clean the needle puncture site with alcohol and disinfect it with a 10% solution of povidone-iodine. Place a drop or two of the fluid on a properly labelled slide. Spread the drop and let air dry before placing in a slide transport container. Alternately, place a drop on one slide. With another slide, place it on top with frosted ends of the slides to the outside making a sandwich. Gently pull the two slides apart lengthwise. Label each slide with proper identifiers. Let dry and submit to the lab in a sterile slide transport container. Do not overfill the containers, as this may lead to greater chances of specimen leakage. If fluid is of very small quantity and only routine C&S is required, a sterile swab may be used to collect specimen. Place inoculated swab into anaerobic transport media (i.e. Port-A-Cult or other anaerobic specimen collector).
