IDEALLY, FOUR SPECIMENS SHOULD BE COLLECTED FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF PROSTATITIS (4-GLASS STAMEY TEST).
Preferably, the specimen should be collected 2-4 hours after the last void to increase the chances of detecting the pathogen.
• If the catheter has been in place for <14d, urine can be collected from the existing catheter. • If the catheter has been in place for >/=14d, the catheter should be removed and either an MSU collected, or a new catheter replaced BEFORE collecting the specimen from the catheter. This ensures an accurate culture result and also helps the patient to recover.

Processing: | Unacceptable specimens: Unpreserved specimens > 2 hours old, not refrigerated or received on ice or more than 24 hours on ice or refrigerated Preserved urines (BD urine culture grey top tube) can be kept at room temperature after collection, but results may be affected if specimen not received at the lab within 48 hours. Urine should be transferred in to the preservative tube IMMEDIATELY after collection for accurate results. | ||
