Serology alone is not a useful test as it may cross-react with human Herpes simplex IgG antibodies.

Specimen Collection Requirements:	Specimen types that can be tested: CSF (requires 0.5 mL) Saliva (requires 0.5 mL) Swabs (dry swab or viral swab in Universal Transport Media) Formalin-fixed and/or paraffin-embedded tissues (CNS) CSF and/or saliva Collect and submit in dedicated sterile 1.5-2.0mL tube. Swabs Swab of material contained in skin lesions Swab of pharynx Swab of any oral lesions Swab of conjunctivae Separate swabs should be used for each anatomic site. Do NOT combine swabs. Submit swabs either in a sterile orange-top container OR using Universal Transport Media Tissues Fresh frozen tissues should be placed in plastic containers Formalin-fixed tissues should also be placed in plastic containers. These need to be clearly identified as being in formalin. Paraffin-embedded tissues – send as entire blocks or four-to-six 10 uM sections in a plastic tube or vial. Do NOT submit paraffin-embedded tissues on a slide. These cannot be processed. B-virus serology Collect DEDICATED serum or plasma (3mL) in a red top or serum separator tube (SST). DO NOT CENTRIFUGE OR SPIN TUBES. CENTRIFUGATION IS NOT REQUIRED AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED.
Stability and Storage:	Store samples in the refrigerator or frozen until being shipped for testing
