BK Virus NAT
(Synonym: BKV PCR, Human Polyomavirus)

Clinical Indications:

Polyomavirus (BK) is an important cause of renal dysfunction and graft loss in renal transplant recipients. Also an important cause of hemorrhagic cystitis in bone marrow transplant recipient.

Test only available for renal and bone marrow transplant patients, or by consulting with Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call

NAT or PCR

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Urine:

5 mL minimum in a sterile container

Blood:

4 mL minimum in EDTA (lavender top) tube
2 mL acceptable for infants
Dedicated EDTA tube that is not shared with other tests is required
One full EDTA tube is optimal to ensure that testing can be done

DO NOT centrifuge

Transport on cold packs/ice. Must be received in less than 48 hours of collection.
