Additional Test Information: | Culture and PCR Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes “primary atypical pneumonia". Most M. pneumoniae is performed by PCR and is the recommended test method. Culture results may not be available for up to four weeks. If both tests are requested PCR will be performed on the appropriate specimen. “Routine” Mycoplasma culture from respiratory specimens is not recommended. Ureaplasma sp. are primarily detected by culture. Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) and culture confirmation Testing performed at Diagnostic Mycoplasma Laboratory Serology (IgM) IgM may be falsely negative if collected within first 6 days of illness NOTE: Ureaplasma sp. have been associated with respiratory disease in neonates and infants (<3 months) | ||
