Collection Alert:

PCR testing for Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma sp. is done only with sufficient clinical history and discussion with Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call

Testing for Mycoplasma genitalium is through the National Microbiology Laboratory and can be arranged in select cases after consultation and approval through the Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Culture	Urethral, vaginal, cervical swabs in Universal Transport Medium (UTM). Other non-respiratory specimen types may also be acceptable, such as urines.
PCR	Urethral, vaginal, cervical swabs in Universal Transport Medium (UTM). Other non-respiratory specimen types may also be acceptable.
Duo Kit	Urine: submit urine in a sterile container
Duo Kit	Swab: Plastic or aluminum shaft swab must be used (do not use wood shaft swab) Immediately inoculate the swab into the Mycoplasma Transport Media Submit swab in Mycoplasma Transport Media

Routine Turn Around Time:

Culture: 1 week
PCR or NAT: 10 days
Duo Kit: 3 days

Additional Test Information:

Routine culture of Mycoplasma hominis or Ureaplasma sp. will only be performed with relevant clinical diagnosis.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility testing (AST) and culture confirmation is performed at the Diagnostic Mycoplasma Laboratory.

Ureaplasma sp. may be implicated in nongonococcal urethritis, Reiter's syndrome and infertility.

PCR is performed at the National Microbiology Laboratory

Exception is bronchial specimens post lung transplant, which is performed at ARUP labs

Other Mycoplasma species such as Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum (previously known as U. urealyticum biovar 1) can be identified using PCR at National Microbiology Laboratory, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Duo Kit:

This assay can differentiate Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma species.
Ureaplasma speciation is not available by routine culture methods.
Mycoplasma genitalium is not detected by Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma culture.
