Test Includes: | Serology NAT/PCR
LABID (Connect Care): | Parvovirus Acute Serology - IgM - LAB800 Parvovirus Immunity Serology - IgG - LAB4309 Parvovirus B19 NAT - LAB5501
Specimen Collection Requirements: | Suspected acute disease Serology
See: Congenital Infections
Test Resources: |
IgM will only be performed if clinical history of suspected rash illness or acute infection is provided on the requisition. Clinical history is required for Parvovirus NAT/PCR test.
Processing: | Samples should be sent to the Public Health Lab with minimal delay, or stored at 4° C in a fridge if a delay is unavoidable.
Testing Area: | Virology, Molecular Diagnostics
Performing Site: | Serology: Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (Edmonton and Calgary) NAT/PCR: Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (Calgary)
Additional Test Information: | For immunocompromised patients, e.g. transplant recipients, the IgM serological response may be absent. Suspected parvovirus infection, usually in the form of chronic anemia or neutropenia, can be diagnosed by NAT/PCR testing of a bone marrow aspirate. If testing was cancelled due to insufficient volume and recollecting a sufficient volume is not possible, contact the Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call to discuss testing options.
Contact Comments: | Consult with the Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call if NAT/PCR testing is required on samples other than whole blood or bone marrow.
