Specimen Collection Requirements: | Adults: Collect two 4 mL EDTA (lavender top) tubes. Pediatric: Collect one full 2 mL EDTA whole blood tube. DO NOT SPIN Transport at Room Temperature Preferred collection on Monday and Tuesday to allow shipping of whole blood before Wednesday to NML. Alert the Virologist On Call when specimen is expected to arrive in the laboratory. | ||

Method and Interpretation of Results: | Samples are tested by PCR for the integration of HIV-1 and HIV-2 into peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)
    HIV-1 DNA was detected indicating that HIV virus is present. Patient should be referred to the Northern Alberta Program or the Southern Alberta Clinic for treatment and follow-up.     HIV-2 DNA was detected indicating that HIV virus is present. Patient should be referred to the Northern Alberta Program or the Southern Alberta Clinic for treatment and follow-up. | ||
