Specimen Collection Requirements: | Refer to University of Alberta Hospital, see catecholamines, urine (UCAT) Prefer 5-10 mL random urine. Minimum: 1.0 mL urine | ||
Processing: | No preservative required. NOTE: Specimen must be frozen within 4 hours of collection. RRL & PSC: Freeze immediately. Transport on ice to the DSC in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition. Ensure frozen specimen is packaged with appropriate packaging material so it remains frozen in transit. Extra-regional: Freeze immediately. Transport on dry ice to the DSC in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition. DSC: Place specimens in freezer upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw. | ||

Additional Test Information: | Patients less than 18 years of age: MISCREFNON Misc Ref Test Name field: HVA VMA Patients 18 years of age and older: Random urine testing is not available for adult patients. For HVA and VMA requests for adult patients, refer to HVA - 24 Hour Urine and VMA - 24 Hour Urine. Certain foods and medications may interfere. Patient instruction sheet is available with collection instructions. Refer to Patient Instructions - Collecting Urine for Homovanillic and Vanillylmandelic Acid HVA and VMA PX4244. This test is only recommended for the investigation of neuroblastoma in pediatric patients. For investigation of pheochromocytoma in adults, "Metanephrines - Urine" should be ordered. | ||
