Specimen Collection Requirements: | See Body Fluid Collection Guidelines. Collect 5-10 mL into a FAN aerobic blood culture bottle or red top tube or sterile container.
Dialysate bags are NOT acceptable. | ||||
Processing: | Store at room temperature. DO NOT refrigerate. DO NOT incubate. Specimen MUST be received in in Microbiology at the Diagnostic and Scientific Centre (DSC) within 2 hours of receipt in the hospital laboratory. Specimens collected in blood culture bottles must arrive at the DSC within 3.5 hours of collection. Note: rural blood culture bottles arriving at the DSC within 12 hours of receipt at the rural laboratory are acceptable due to the increased time required to transport the specimen. | ||||

Additional Test Information: | Routine culture will detect most yeast species. Indicate Candida/Yeast on requisition if required. If clinically indicated, specimen source also suitable for anaerobic culture. Turnaround time for negative culture: 4 days. |
