Specimen Collection Requirements:

Zika Virus NAT (PCR)

Dedicated 5 mL EDTA (lavender top) AND
Dedicated 10-20 mL urine in a sterile orange-top container, with no preservatives (urine submitted in containers with preservative will be cancelled as it cannot be tested).

Zika virus serology testing (if indicated - see Additional Test Information below)

Dedicated 5 mL SST or
Paediatrics may use dedicated 2 mL red top tube

Routine Turn Around Time:

Zika virus NAT (PCR) - 4 days

Additional Test Information:

Choice of the appropriate Zika virus serology test should be made in consultation with the Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call
Phlebotomy/laboratory staff should collect specimens required for the testing as requested by clinicians. All Zika virus testing requests will be reviewed by the Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call
Test requests for Zika virus testing are reviewed by the Public Health Lab (ProvLab) Microbiologist On-Call. Testing may be declined, cancelled, or delayed if there is insufficient history provided on the requisition (paper or electronic) or if the patient does not meet testing criteria.
