Clinical Indications: | Quantitative acylcarnitine analysis is a screen for a variety of organic acid and fatty acid oxidation disorders, and for monitoring patients with these disorders. | ||||
Collection Alert: | Hours fasting must be indicated. Recommend collection following a minimum four hour fast or just before next feeding for newborns. Specimens collected from non-fasting patients will be accepted for testing. | ||||

Specimen Collection Requirements: | Ensure that expiry date of Newborn Metabolic Screening card (requisition) has not been exceeded before proceeding with collection. Use a heel poke if patient is less than one year old or a finger poke if older. Collect two saturated blood spots on the Newborn Metabolic Screening card. Alternative:
