Clinical Indications: | Catheter tips should be performed when a catheter is removed for suspected catheter-related bloodstream infection. Catheter cultures should not be obtained routinely when all catheters removed. NOTE: Non-intravascular tips are not acceptable for culture and will not be processed. This includes large drainage tube tips, Tenckhoff catheter tips and Foley or other urine catheter tips. If systemic symptoms/signs are present (eg. fevers, chills, rigors), it is recommended to also submit 2 Blood Culture sets, one from a peripheral site and one collected from the catheter prior to its removal. For catheter exit site infections, submit Superficial Wound Culture. | ||

Specimen Collection Requirements: | Clean around the catheter insertion site with 70% isopropanol prior to removal. Collect the distal 2-3 cm of the line tip and place it in a sterile container. Indicate anatomical site and specimen type on requisition. Provide relevant clinical history including current antibiotic therapy and how long the catheter has been in place. | ||
