Test Name/Synonym:

Genital Culture, Bacterial
(Synonym: Vaginal Culture)

Clinical Indications:

Culture is routinely performed for children 0-13 years of age.

For patients > 14 years, refer to Vaginitis Screen for routine testing. Culture will only be performed in this age group if adequate clinical history is provided on requisition/order:

Toxic Shock Syndrome
Puerperal/Postpartum Sepsis
Surgical infection post-pelvic/gynecological surgery (including hysterectomy, dilatation & curettage (D&C), episiotomy, loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) and/or vaginal repair
Rule-out Group A Streptococcus
Rule-out Staphylococcus aureus

APL Regional Microbiology performs this testing on-site for specimens collected at Regional Hospital Sites (Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Northern Lights, Medicine Hat, and Chinook). See below for test information at these sites.
