| Clinical Indications: | This test is used for the diagnostic investigation of neurotransmitter metabolism disorders in a patient based on clinical presentation and/or assessment of inconclusive molecular genetic testing. | ||
| Ordering Alert: | Call the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) Biochemical Genetics Laboratory (403) 955-7379 or the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) Biochemical Genetics Laboratory (780) 407-8820 to notify the lab of the scheduled lumbar puncture. | ||
| Collection Alert: | Call the ACH Biochemical Genetics Laboratory (403) 955-7379 between 0800h – 1500h or the UAH Biochemical Genetics Laboratory (780) 407-8820 between 0800h – 1200h, Monday to Friday, to obtain the special collection tubes and collection instructions.
Collection tubes must remain refrigerated or on ice until specimens are collected and frozen. | ||

| Specimen Collection Requirements: | Testing is referred out to the Medical Neurogenetics (MNG/Labcorp) Lab, please view Neurotransmitter Metabolites (5HIAA, HVA, 3OMD) (CSF) for further information. | ||
| Test Resources: | Submit request using the applicable requisition or Connect Care online order entry:
Please ensure all required information, including patient's clinical history/indication, is provided on the requisition. | ||
| Processing: | If specimens are not blood contaminated, immediately freeze at -80°C. If specimens are blood contaminated, spin tubes at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes at 4°C. Label a second set of neurotransmitter tubes and transfer the spun tubes to the same tube number of the new set. Immediately freeze at -80°C. If specimen was blood contaminated, indicate this on the requisition or add as a Specimen Flag comment. | ||
| Transportation: | Deliver specimens to ACH or UAH Biochemical Genetics Lab as soon as possible on dry ice. | ||
| Testing Area: | Referred Out Specimens should be sent to UAH External Send Out bench (North) or ACH Genetics & Genomics (South). | ||
