Primary Container:

Sterile, screw-capped container

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Collect fresh tissue and submit in portions no larger than 1 mm³ in size.

Place the tissue immediately in a screw capped vial containing cold buffered glutaraldehyde obtained from laboratory; ensure the specimen is completely covered.

Label the vial according to AHS sample acceptance criteria.

Separate sample sites must be submitted in separate vials.

If orientation is required, it must be noted on the requisition.

For muscle and nerve: refer to Muscle Biopsy or Nerve Biopsy.

For skin biopsy: submit entire punch biopsy or bisect submitting 1/2 for routine histology and 1/2 for EM. Routine histology is placed in formalin and EM placed in glutaraldehyde.

Blood and bone marrow: samples are collected in a heparinized (green top) tube.

Minimum quantities required: 5 mL from adults, 3 mL from children, and 1 mL from infants.

Collection and delivery of blood and bone marrow specimens must occur prior to 1600 hours. The EM Lab should be informed prior to the submission of blood and bone marrow specimens.

Stability and Storage:

Room Temperature unless after hours (between 0700 and 1600).
Refrigerate if the specimen is taken after hours.

Processing:

Blood and bone marrow samples are prepared by the Hematology Laboratory and delivered immediately to the EM laboratory.

Transportation:

Deliver to your site Anatomical Pathology department which will forward the specimen to applicable EM lab.
